St. John the Baptist Parish Schools
Announces 2009 Science Fair Winner

          The St. John the Baptist Parish School Board recently announced the names of those students who were winners in the district-wide Science Fair and those who advanced and placed in the regional and state competitions.
            The District Science Fair winners for Division I included:

  • Animal Science – Dustin Sorapuru, 1st place; Richard Hill, 2nd place; Shante Johnson, 3rd place
  • Behavioral & Social Science – Michael Hale, 1st place; Jessica Walker, 2nd place; Brandon McMullen, 3rd place; Quineisha Washington, honorable mention
  • Biochemistry – Jaya Jones, 1st place
  • Cellular & Molecular Biology – Daryl Bowman, honorable mention.
  • Chemistry – Jeremy Jackson, 1st place; Cheyenne Ortiz, 2nd place; Deja’Lynn Hicks, 3rd place; Tyreal Johnson and Amanda Glueck/B. Guillory, honorable mention.
  • Computer Science – Jarron Williams, 1st place
  • Earth & Planetary Science – Amanda Duhe, 1st place; Hayley Duhe, 2nd place; Chris Carmouche, 3rd place; and Juan Marshall, honorable mention
  • Energy & Transportation – Tea Starks, 1st place
  • Engineering – Brendon Bowser, 1st place; Alexis Ivey, 2nd place; Brandon Gregory, 3rd place, Jacob Di Maggio, honorable mention.
  • Environmental Management – Deja Fiest, 1st place; Laron Washington, 2nd place
  • Environmental Sciences – Ronyell Washington, 1st place; Jared Tregre, 2nd place; Abby St. Amant, 3rd place and Brea Smith, honorable mention.
  • Mathematical Science – Kayla Ceasar, 1st place; James Mitter, 2nd place; and Alexis Bonvillion, 3rd place.
  • Medicine & Health – Tajah (Henry) Jackson, 1st place; Crystal Kemp, 2nd place; Tamecka Robinson, 3rd place and Darius Adams, honorable mention
  • Microbiology – Kendell Jackson, 1st place; Troy Thomas, 2nd place; Jessica Sanford, 3rd place.
  • Physics & Astronomy – Tiffany Johnson, 1st place; Edward Leonard, 2nd place; Leonard Harris, 3rd place; Arthur Chabaud, Amber Soileau and Jalon Nicholas, honorable mention.
  • Plant Sciences – Ici Parks, 1st place; Kandis Caston, 2nd place; Angela Green, 3rd place; DeQuan Anderson and Rayneeka Bass, honorable mention
  • Team Projects – Damian Matherne and Dylan Poche, 1st place; Charles Rousseau and Jevon Julian, 2nd place; Norvel Lassere and Patrane Martin, and Gabrielle Clement and Lyndsay Fagan, tied for 3rd place

Those Division I district winners who also placed at the Regional Science Fair at Nicholls State University included: Jaya Jones of Garyville/Mt. Airy Magnet, 3rd place in Biochemistry; Jarron Williams of John L. Ory Magnet, honorable mention in Computer Science; Amanda Duhe of Garyville/Mt. Airy Magnet, honorable mention in Earth & Planetary Science; Cheyenne Ortiz of John L. Ory Magnet, 3rd place in Chemistry; Kendell Jackson of Lake Pontchartrain, honorable mention in microbiology; Abby St. Amant of John L. Ory Magnet, honorable mention in Environmental Sciences; and Jared Tregre of John L. Ory Magnet, 1st place in Environment Sciences.  Tregre will advance to the state competition in that category.

The District Science Fair Winners in Division II included:

  • Behavioral & Social Science – Arnelle Jack, 1st place; Raven Celestine, 2nd place.
  • Cellular & Molecular Biology – Malna Farnell, 1st place; Shondreka August, 2nd place
  • Chemistry – Johnathan Sandolph, 1st place; Jalen Adams, 2nd place.
  • Energy & Transportation – Ronnie Fiest, 1st place; Jennika Jones, 2nd place
  • Earth & Planetary Science – Lester Rainey, 1st place
  • Mathematical Science – Ormoni Favorite, 1st place
  • Medicine & Health – Austin Terry, 1st place; Diamond Bright, 2nd place
  • Physics & Astronomy – Tierra Williams, 1st place; and Rashaan Nicholson, 3rd place
  • Plant Sciences – Brandon Schexnayder, 1st place; Barry Hanson, 2nd place; and Renilda Trench, 3rd place

Those Division II winners who also placed at the Regional Science Fair at Nicholls State University, included Arnelle Jack of West St. John High, 2nd place in Behavioral & Social Science; Jennika Jones of West St. John High, honorable mention in Earth & Planetary Science; Lester Rainey, 2nd place in Earth & Planetary Science; Brandon Schexnayder, West St. John High, honorable mention in Plant Sciences; DaShera Gros and Diamond Bright of West St. John High tied for 3rd place in Medicine & Health.
Lester Rainey also won the American Meteorological Society Award and Stockholm Junior Water Prize for his project “Hurricanes: A City’s Response.”
