West St. John High School Holds International Food Exposition

West St. John High School held its 2009-2010 International Food Exposition November 18, 2009.  The event was a collaborative effort between Ms. Janice Lubin’s Principles of Business class and Dr. Bertha Davis-Williams’s Nutrition Education and ProStart I classes.  The event was a competition between the students who were divided into groups.  The competition involved poster presentations, meals, and oral presentations.

The presentations highlighted twelve countries from around the world including Argentina, Brazil, the Bahamas, the Caribbean, China, Israel, Italy, London, Mexico, Morocco, Switzerland, and Thailand.  First place winners from the prospective classes were as follows: Principles of Business—(Mexico) Talor Lewis, Blakele Lillie, and Breyanne Silas; Nutrition Education—(The Carribean) Ambria Majors, Malana Farnell, and Ariel Pierre; ProStart I—(Israel) Jada Becnel and Reginald Dumas.  All other students were presented Certificates of Participation.

The judges for this event were Chef Andre Elfer, a graduate of  Nicholls State University Culinary Arts program, and Executive Chef Pamela Tramble-Johnson.  Chef Elfer currently holds the position of manager at Café Perique in Gramercy, Louisiana.  Executive Chef Tramble-Johnson is currently employed by the Job Corps Program in Hartford, Connecticut, managed by Education and Training Resources.  Her job title is that of food service manager, technical advisor for the food services and culinary arts program in a variety of regions of the Department of Labor Job Corps Program.

Special thanks to the following people:  Mr. James Blanchard, Director of Louisiana Restaurant Association for his attendance and support; Ms. Linda Bailey for creating the Program Booklet; Ms. Erica Merrick, Principal; and other faculty and staff of West St. John High School for their support.
